Invent a new instrument.
Working under a master luthier, Rachel Rosenkrantz, I was directed to create 5 instruments in 5 weeks. My final piece was a mutable, plywood, industrial-looking ukulele.
UKE
Process:
Using classical luthier techniques, I was able to design and create a fully functioning ergonomic and mutable ukulele. The front and back pieces are finished with a satin finish and the side panels and neck of the ukulele are stained with a dark oak stain. The begs are connected to the neck via a scarf joint and an indented slot supports the neck connection to the body. Ribbing on the inside of the ukulele provides structure to support the force applied when attaching and strumming the strings.
The final product includes asymmetrically placed tuning pegs, dual toned exterior, foam filled adjustable practice mute, ergonomic thigh indentation for comfortable strumming, industrial scratches, and a satin finish.
Materials: Plywood, maple wood, ukulele hardware, wood carving tools, Japanese saw
